The single “Spirit of Luthuli” is a song that was composed as part of the Luthuli Museum’s annual business programme. It honours the legacy of Nobel Laureate and former President of the African National Congress (ANC) Chief Albert Luthuli in the community of Groutville, where the Museum is based.
Sibongiseni Msweli “Jobe The Poet”, Lungisani Maxhakane, Zamalinda Mbatha and Nokuthula Sibiya came together to compose and record the song under the mentorship of renowned pianist and producer Sibusiso “Mash” Mashiloane. “Chief Luthuli is one of the highly esteemed leaders in history of the struggle, to be part of a music project that honours him is one of the priceless moments of my entire music career”, Mbatha said.
“Guiding these young talents is my way of giving back to my community. Their enthusiasm and passion fuels my energy”, Mashiloane said. Onexus Music Business Solutions are the facilitators of the music business programme, that is an intensive 10-week programme that touches on various music industry topics, such as copyrights, marketing and performing.
The Luthuli Museum’s mission is to conserve, uphold, promote and propagate the life, values, philosophies and legacy of the late Chief Albert Luthuli. Music and the arts play a big role in implementing this mission and aside from skills development, monthly concerts for schools and community are hosted at the museum.
