Jazz vocalist Hendrick Monyeki will be performing at the UKZN Centre for Jazz and Popular Music on Wednesday 10 September. He is a gifted singer with a distinctive tenor and musical versatility that spreads across Jazz, Soul ballads and Gospel genres. Hendrick graduated at the Music Academy of Gauteng, founded by trumpeter and scholar Jonny Mekoa, where he studied Performing Arts between 2006 and 2009. He also acquired grades with the Royal School of Music in London.
Hendrick did his internship as a singer with the Gauteng Jazz Orchestra. He has worked with a number of seasoned musicians and Jazz legends such as Ernest “Stompie” Manana, Barney Rachabane, Khaya Mahlangu, Sydney Mavundla and Prince Lengoasa. The orchestra also offered him dream opportunities to perform with visiting musicians like Lalah Hathaway, Lizz Wright, Randy Crawford, Joe Sample, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kirk Whalum and George Benson.

He has been around in the music industry for a while. These years of experience have seen him working as a background artist with a long list of accomplished artists including Kgotso Makgalema, Tebz David, Lionel Petersen, James Okon, Uche, Jonas Gwangwa, Sibongile Khumalo, Johnny Mekoa Big Band, Selaelo Selota, Moreira Chonguica, Mimi Mtshali and the David Beck Trio. Hendrick has made a mark as a Jazz composer and performer.
His performance will weave together timeless works of South African Jazz Legends, beloved Jazz standards, and his own original compositions, offering the audience a soulful celebration of Jazz heritage and contemporary artistry as we celebrate Heritage Month. Hendrick’s ensemble will comprise of guitarist Andile Skosana, pianist Sphe Mngwengwe, bassist Senzo Mdamba, drummer Sub Zondi and trumpeter Siyanda Zulu.
The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music is located at Dennis Shepstone Building, Level 2, Howard College Campus. Tickets can be purchased at Webtickets or at the venue. They are selling at R120 for general public, R90 for pensioners and R60 for students with a valid student card. Doors open at 17h00 and the concert starts at 17h30.
