The UKZN Centre for Jazz and Popular Music will host a performance by Vienna born and London based musician Guido Spannocchi on Wednesday 08 October. Predominantly known for his woodwind skills, alto and baritone saxophone as well as flute, Guido has come to international attention since the release of his entirely analogue album “Ahead Only” in 2017. He has since focussed on composing and performing his original music in various settings and ensembles, and has published over 10 albums and EPs on his label Audioguildo Records.

His most recent albums “Perihelion” 2022 and “Live at Porgy & Bess” 2023 have gained him international press coverage and critical acclaim in print media like Jazzwise, Die Presse, Wiener Zeitung and The Wire as well as significant radio presence on BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 6, JazzFM, OE1, WWFMU and many more. Guido has played with artists like Sun Ra Arkestra, Joe Zawinul, Bobby McFerrin, Shabaka Hutchings, Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) and has had official concerts and recordings with Nubya Garcia, Larry Bartley, Tony Kofi, Nigel Prince, Stuart Zender, Jay Phelps, Maria Chiara Argiro, Alabaster DePlume, Ruth Goller, Simon Bolivar Orchestra (El Sistema) and many more.

For the gig, he will be joined by Thuto Motsemme on bass, Zibusiso Makhathini on piano, and Sbu Zondi on drums. The UKZN Centre for Jazz and Popular Music is located at Level 2, Dennis Sheptstone Building, Howard College Campus. Tickets will be available for cash at the door. They are selling for R120 for general public, R90 for pensioners and R60 for students with a valid student card. Doors open at 17h00 and the concert starts at 17h30.
