The legacy of South African Jazz pioneer Isaac “Zacks” Nkosi will be honoured with the installation of an official Blue Plaque on Wednesday 14 May, marking his centenary. The plaque will be installed around the premises of DR Knak Primary School, located in Alexandra, Gauteng. This site holds deep historical significance, as it stands where Nkosi’s family home once stood – No. 76, 10th Avenue – in Alexandra, Johannesburg.

The City of Johannesburg Arts Culture & Heritage Directorate is responsible for the plaque’s installation, in partnership with the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation, who are acting as the service provider and have secured the necessary permissions and support from the Nkosi Estate. The bandleader, composer and saxophonist was undoubtedly a music icon.
A public unveiling ceremony will be announced at a later date. This forthcoming event will formally commemorate Nkosi’s enduring contribution to South African music and cultural heritage, inviting the public to celebrate his life and legacy. Isaac “Zacks” Nkosi remains a towering figure in South African Jazz history, and this installation ensures that his influence will be permanently recognised within the community where his journey began.
