Music meets conversation, comradery and collaboration as distinguished drummer, composer, and educator Sphelelo ‘Lelo’ Mazibuko proudly presents ‘Faces of Identity’, a deeply personal and visionary live music taking place at Untitled Basement on Friday, 29 May. Inspired by ‘FACES’, his two-album debut project, the experience expands on the themes of heritage, identity, and musical lineage. It also marks his formal introduction as a bandleader with a clear and confident artistic identity.
Released in 2025, ‘FACES: The First Movement’ serves as a meditation on heritage, mentorship, proximity and carries the spirit of intergenerational dialogue. It features many of the collaborators and mentors who have shaped Mazibuko’s artistic path over the years. He is currently developing the second instalment of the two-volume album, continuing his exploration of identity, memory, collaboration, and sonic storytelling.

Now, these themes come into a live setting, creating an immersive musical and conversational experience that explores the stories, relationships, and influences that shape artistic identity. The inaugural edition features two of South Africa’s most respected and forward-thinking artists, pianist Thandi Ntuli, and bassist Benjamin Jephta. Bound by years of collaboration, artistic exchange, and friendship, the trio will revisit music from the formative stages of their careers while engaging audiences in honest and reflective conversation about their individual and collaborative musical journeys.
The Untitled Basement is located in 7 Reserve Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg. Doors for this conversational music experience open at 18h00. Tickets are available via Quicket at R350 online and R400 at the door.
