After nearly two decades of musical growth, collaboration, and artistic exploration, South African bassist, composer, producer, bandleader, and musical director Vimbs Mavimbs finally steps into the spotlight with the release of his highly anticipated debut album, “Late Bloomer”.
A deeply personal and introspective body of work, “Late Bloomer” is both a celebration and a reflection of Mavimbs’ unconventional journey into music. Having only committed to a professional music career later in life, the album embraces the beauty of becoming at one’s own pace and serves as an ode to those whose paths unfold outside traditional timelines. Rooted in themes of community, resilience, and self-discovery, the album’s title draws inspiration from the concept of the ‘late bloomer’ and the butterfly metaphor, symbolizing hope, evolution, and the courage to embrace new beginnings.

“I am incredibly excited to finally share this labour of love with the world. Late Bloomer represents years of listening, learning, dreaming and becoming. It is a reflection of my journey, but also a tribute to everyone who has ever felt that their time would come later than expected”, Mavimbz said. “This album would not exist without the support of the many people who have walked this journey with me. I am deeply grateful to my family, mentors, collaborators, and the incredible musicians who helped bring these compositions to life. More than a personal milestone, Late Bloomer is a celebration of community, patience, and the belief that the richest stories are often shaped over time”, he added.
Spanning nine tracks, “Late Bloomer” effortlessly bridges tradition and innovation. While deeply informed by South Africa’s rich Jazz heritage, the album ventures boldly into contemporary and experimental territory, creating a sound that feels distinctly modern while remaining respectful to the genre’s foundations. The project captures the spirit of a millennial Jazz voice unrestricted by convention, inviting listeners into a rich sonic landscape shaped by memory, curiosity, and artistic freedom.
Listeners will be reunited with previously released singles and fan favourites “Long Drive” and “Family Gathering”, while discovering new highlights such as “Ngelosi”, featuring South African Jazz vocalist and scholar Spha Mdlalose, and “Chapman’s Peak”, a composition long held to Mavimbs’ heart. The album brings together an exceptional cast of South African Jazz talent, reflecting Vimbs Mavimbs’ deep roots within the country’s vibrant music community.

Alongside Mdlalose’s stirring vocal performances, pianist DiTeboho Kobedi delivers evocative and masterful contributions throughout the project, while celebrated musicians trumpeter Robin Fassie, saxophonist Sisonke Xonti, and guitarist Keenan Ahrends lend their distinctive voices to compositions such as “Chapman’s Peak”, creating richly textured and dynamic soundscapes. Additional contributions from acclaimed percussionist Tlale Makhene, saxophonist Thami Mahlangu, drummer Lungile Kunene and vocalist Zarcia Zacheus further enrich the album, making “Late Bloomer” a powerful celebration of artistic excellence, collaboration, and contemporary South African Jazz.
This is not merely a debut album. It is the culmination of a lifetime of listening, learning, and creating. It is a celebration of the unhurried harvest, a testament to the power of patience, and the arrival of a singular artistic voice whose moment has finally come. The album argues that some artistic voices require time to mature and that the richest stories emerge from years of experience, observation, and mastery. “Late Bloomer” is available on all digital streaming platforms.
