The University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Centre for Jazz and Popular Music (CJPM) will host accomplished singer, songwriter and recording artist Njabuloseh, who will bring his distinctive blend of South African Jazz and Soul on Wednesday, 14 October. This performance, titled “Brand Nu Old Skool”, promises an evening of soulful melodies, Jazz inspired musicianship and contemporary African sounds, as Njabuloseh presents a performance centred around his acclaimed 11 track album of the same title.
Released in 2020, “Brand Nu Old Skool” showcases Njabuloseh’s distinctive musical voice and his ability to draw from the rich traditions of Soul, Jazz and Contemporary African music. The album includes tracks such as “Blindfolded Freedom”, further reflecting his approach to musical arrangements. Njabuloseh’s contribution to South African music extends beyond his own recordings. As a songwriter, he has contributed to a number of projects by established artists, with writing credits including Maleh’s “Under My Skin”, Swazi Dlamini’s “Vulinhliziyo”, Brian Temba’s “Angeke” and “Intethelelo”, RJ Benjamin’s “Dali Wami”, and Maxhoba’s “Asambeni”, among others.
His musical foundation was shaped through his studies in Jazz and Popular Music in KwaZulu-Natal (Natal Tech/DUT), where he developed his skills in composition, Jazz vocal technique and improvisation. His musical influences span generations and genres, including artists such as D’Angelo, Rahsaan Patterson , Lucky Dube and Stevie Wonder. For this special performance, Njabuloseh will be joined by a stellar band featuring Sphe Mngwengwe on piano, Thuto Motsemme on bass and Sbu Zondi on drums. Together, they will bring the material from “Brand Nu Old Skool” to life in an intimate live setting that celebrates musicianship, groove and the enduring spirit of South African Jazz and Soul.
