Soprano and University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) trained classical vocalist Khumbu Dhlamini will deliver “Opera According to Jazz”, a live performance at the institution’s Centre for Jazz and Popular Music on Wednesday 19 August. The concert will explore the meeting point between the disciplined world of Opera musical experience that brings together Classical repertoire, African musical influences and Jazz interpretation.

Dhlamini, who studied Opera and Classical music at UKZN with a focus on vocal technique and music interpretation, has developed a diverse musical journey through performances locally and abroad. Her exposure to South African Traditional music, Jazz and other genres has fuelled a musical curiosity that has ultimately led to the development of “Opera According to Jazz”.

The much anticipated 90-minute performance will feature well known Classical and African classical melodies, re-arranged through a Jazz lens. Dhlamini will explore the spaces where Opera and Jazz converse – where disciplined vocal lines melt into improvisation and Classical melodies are transformed through Jazz harmony, rhythm and groove.

The concert also celebrates the legacy and vocal artistry of some of Dhlamini’s favourite South African female vocalists and their ability to move effortlessly between musical genres. Audiences can expect horn driven harmonies, vibrant grooves, strong rhythmic foundations, improvisation, and a dynamic balance between voice and instrument.

This performance is designed to highlight the individual talents of each musician while maintaining a cohesive and distinctive ensemble identity. Dhlamini will be joined on stage by an accomplished ensemble of musicians who have performed extensively in KZN and beyond the province’s leading music spaces. Her band members are Zolile Mgqatsa on double bass, Zibusiso Makhathini on piano, Siyanda Zulu on trumpet and Sbu Ncube on drums.

The Centre for Jazz and Popular Music is located at Level 2, Dennis Shepstone Building, Howard College Campus. Tickets are available for cash at the door. They are selling at R130 for general public, R100 for pensioners and R70 for students with a valid card. Doors open at 17h00 and concert starts at 17h30.
